You very good tutor…
my question is i have seen some content creators who make videos discussing about new movies review or new songs of Nigeria artist or about a trending news in the country on their channel.
is that having nothing to do with copywrite.
Hi Cyrus,
Very good question. I am glad you asked this question.
I see that you are using information you learnt from the first lesson to make decisions on what kind of niche or content to pursue.
Researching on a niche is very important before you go into it.
This will be a long discussion.
I did a little research on what you asked and realized one trend in channels reviewing Nigerian movies. Most of the channels doing this did not have Youtube Ads running on their videos.
What this means is that they are unable to monetize their channel through the Youtube Partner Program.
And I saw that most of them have more than 1000 subscribers, I found one called ” Adenike O. Adebayo” with
40,000 subscribers and no ads on all their videos I played. I also found one channel called
“Home of Trending Movies 2020” with over 394000 subscribers They just started 1 month ago,
and their total number of views is 43,000.I also went through their videos and realized that
no ads were running on their videos, meaning they haven’t been accepted unto the Youtube Partner Program.
With this number of subscribers on these channels, they surely would have monetized their channels if there was no problem with their content.
Who will not monetize their channel when they reach 1000 subs, everyone would.
Unless of course they haven’t met their watch-time hours which I highly doubt.
Do note that all movies have copyright on them, and the studio will hit you up
for copyright claims which may result in a strike, because they spend a lot of money to produce the movies.
And this will happen after you have gotten a lot of views and you will now be required to delete the video.
This can really make you de-motivated to continue. However people ignore copyright claims even if they get them,
and they accept the fact that they can never monetize their videos. SO they find other ways to monetize their channels. Maybe selling on their channels.
I will advise you to contact the studios who own the movie to ask them if you can use parts of their videos for a review. If they give you the rights then you can go ahead and do this. Maybe those channels you are seeing have asked for permission from the movie studios and hence may not be getting copyright claims. They may even be getting some money from the movie studios because they are showing parts of the videos and when people get interested they may purchase the movie or watch the full movie which in turn benefits the Movie studio and the youtube creator as well.
If you do not get their permissions please I will advise you to not use such videos. Unless you have other ways to monetize their your channel.
I do hear people say that if you use under 5 seconds of a movie clip, you do not get copyright issues. As well as still images. But you always have to use your own audio and if possible show your face in the video to avoid copyright. These options can however not be guaranteed because 5 seconds of someone’s video is still using copyrighted video. And the studio can ask you to pull it down if they want to, even though you used only 5 seconds of their clip.Every Studio varies, but the bigger the studio the harder it is to use their videos/movies.
So my advise is use your own videos to avoid copyright issues, or if you want to go this way, keep in mind that you may not be able to monetize your videos.
The best way to avoid copyright is using your own videos or audio. But if you have other ways to monetize your content for instance selling movie tickets on your channel, then go for it because it is easy content.
hanks for the breakdown, actually is not about movies review, a good example of what am about doing is āKwadwo sheldonā in Ghana i am sure you know him. please you can help check him out⦠he has ads running on his videos, yet i see him play artist songs in Ghana video and also bring some issues and matters in Ghana to talk about on his channel with videos that has even GTV, metrotv news.
thanks.
Hi Cyrus,
I have checked Kwadwo Sheldon out and I get your point.
This will also be a long discussion. I hope you are able to read long messages.Lol. So somewhere last year, Youtube updated their policies and made these statements.
Let me copy and send you exactly what it said.
“”Ads may appear on your uploaded videos even if you haven’t monetized the videos yourself. If your video contains content to which you don’t own all necessary rights, the rights holder may have chosen to place ads on it. YouTube may also place ads on videos in channels not in the YouTube Partner Program””
You can check more info about this here using this link from Google.
https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/2475463?hl=en#:~:text=Ads%20may%20appear%20on%20your,in%20the%20YouTube%20Partner%20Program.
What this change means is that now you may see ads running on a Channel with 100 subscribers, or channels which are not monetized.
It seems Youtube wants more money and is now placing ads on non-monetized channels.
This can really deceive a lot of people who are just starting Youtube because they may look at channels which have lower subscribers than 1000 and see they have ads on their channels, they may also see channels which have a lot of subscribers but are showing copyright materials and still see ads on them. The ads may show on channels with copyright materials because now whether your channel is monetized or not,Youtube can put ads on them. I have noticed that for these two types of channels, Youtube places the ads right before the videos begin and you may not necessarily find ads after the video starts or in the middle like properly monetized channels or you may not even see the ads at all. This can make you think that channels using copyright materials like Kwadwo Sheldon have been accepted unto the Youtube Partner Program but it may not be so at all. They are using other means to make money on Youtube since they wont get money from Youtube. And the other ways to make money also brings in a decent income especially if you have a lot of subscribers. We will talk about how Kwadwo Sheldon may be making money.
Look at the 2nd line of what Youtube Said :
“If your video contains content to which you don’t own all necessary rights, the rights holder may have chosen to place ads on it.”
This is what the above line from Youtube also means. It means that the owner of the copyright content you have used may not ask you to remove it from your channel but they may claim ownership and what this means is that all of the money made from the ads of that video will go to the Owner or artist.
Hence any money from the ads from that video goes straight to them(that is the rightful owners of the content) and not the Youtuber showing that video.
And who does not want extra money, so the artist may allow you to use the video, but they make money off your views and not you.
It may also be that the Youtuber has friendship or deals with the artists or have asked permission to use their videos, and depending on the relationship he may be allowed to use it or not.
So you always have to ask. They may give you permission to use it and not claim ownership, but Youtube will still see it as Copyright material and hence they will not accept you unto the Program, you will not even try to apply for monetization knowing you have copyright content on your channel. And this is what many Youtubers do, they will never apply because they know they will not be accepted. So they find another way to make money. If people like the content and you get views and subscribers you can go for it and forget about Youtube Adsense revenue, and you can still make money other ways.
Because of this problem most Youtubers knowing they cant make money off this kind of channel they try to make money other ways locally. What Kwadwo may be doing is , because he is aware that he may not get accepted onto the Youtube Partner program, he has found another way of making money off his channel. And this is what is called Sponsorships. Because he has over 300,000 subscribers, he can easily make money doing things this way. If you watch his videos, he puts this template on his videos while he is editing it, he goes like “FOR SPONSORSHIP call (his telephone number).” I have seen adverts from “Tap Tap Send” on his videos, this is local company who wants him to advertise their product for him. So for instance he goes to “Tap Tap send” company and tells them ” I have a channel with over 300,000 subscribers who watch my videos, I can insert an advert of any of your product into my video and if my subscribers watch the video you have over 300,000 people seeing your product”. Tap Tap Send company or any Ghanaian company will like this idea, knowing especially that his subscribers are mostly Ghanaians. And Tap Tap send wants to reach as many Ghanaians as possible to use their product so they can make money. The company will now ask Kwadwo, how much will you charge us for this?. Then he charges Tap Tap send and then makes money from them. The other way round, if a company sees ” For Sponsorship call this number “on his videos and they call Kwadwo that they want him to put an advert of their company on his video, he will charge them and do it for them. Companies pay people with big platforms like TV and Radio stations to advertise for them. And Youtube is more or less like TV. People come there to watch content. And it is same with artist songs, if a Ghanaian artist releases a song and wants it to become popular in Ghana, he can pay for sponsorship to Kwadwo, and then he will play the songs on his channel for them, since he has a lot of Subscribers from Ghana and maybe Nigeria. So Kwadwo can now make money this way even though he cannot make any YouTube Revenue from adsense.
Check this latest video of his you will see a Tap Tap send advert template on his video right at the beginning and getting to the end of the video he puts his number there for paid sponsorships.
https://youtu.be/VRMbBSQRum8
Sponsorships is not free, companies will pay him. What you can do is you can call him on the number and intentionally ask him how much he will charge you if he puts your product on his video and advertise it for you. And you will see that it is not free.
Other times he can sell tickets to football matches or movies and make money that way as well.
So Cyrus,
If this is the way you want to go, it is good if only you accept the fact that you may not make money from Youtube monetization itself, but you can still make a decent income from other ways on Youtube depending on the niche you select especially if you have a lot of followers and you get a lot of views for your videos.
So before you start, sit down and ask yourself how else you can make money in your niche if you do not get accepted onto the YPP. If those ways are also good, go for it.
Please I already have a channel Ghmyhome TV….the channel is basically for trending news. please how best can I get more and genuine subs. And also how can I optimize it to get on YouTube ranking?
Hi Elliot,
I am happy about. your question and glad to assist you.
I have taken a look at your channel and I see that you have not applied what you learnt in the course yet. I believe you may not have finished the course yet. So first thing I want you to do is finish the course and apply each lesson in the course to your channel and videos. I see that your channel has no keywords. Your titles are not optimised and your descriptions are not optimised as well. Your videos have no keywords, and hence not optimised.Apply what you will learn about keyword optimisation.Since its more on trending news, try to post more videos weekly if this is something you want to take on a full-time basis. Also use more long tail tags, the tags you use are short and very difficult to rank for. Apply the lessons on tags as well. Your thumbnails are not catchy and the texts on the thumbnails are very difficult to read. The pictures on your thumbnails are difficult to identify on a one-time glance for some of your videos. Use good quality images which are easy to identify the story behind the video. Remember that if people are unable to figure out what your video is about by just looking at your thumbnail they will not click to watch your video. Make the thumbnail texts easy to read. You can use images to make more videos so that you can post more, images about trending topics or news, then you put your voice behind telling the story. Watch what other people in your niche are doing, the good ones and compare with yours. Remember to apply what you have learnt in the course. And I believe things will be better.
Thank You.
thank you for the classes so far.
in the previous video, you started with copyright music and said the ones with free or no copyright can be used without acknowledging the rightful owner.
But here, while talking on copyright free music, you said we need to get their descriptions and include whilst we use them
I’m a bit confused.
Hi Akinlade,
Thanks for the question. Note that there are two types of copyright free music, even though both types are free to use. There is one that requires āAttribution ā and ones that do not require Attribution. If the music owner says ā No attribution requiredā it means you can use the music without putting in your description who owns the music. However if it requires attribution, you can still use it and attribute the owner of the music in the description. Both are copyright free, which you can use, but sometimes the owner says that you should attribute him wherever you use it. Thatās the difference. If you check on YouTube Music Library for music, you will see the two types when you select ā Attribution ā. You can decide to use only ā No Attribution requiredā ones. That way you donāt have to mention anything in the description.
I hope this helps.
Thank you
Please, what about a situation whereby, both the sound and image… Or say, you have two or more images that need attribution, is it proper to copy all the attribution links, one by one and paste them in the same video description?
Thank you very much
The tutorial is very comprehensive
