Hello Maureen,
A sales order originates with the customer as he/she is making a purchase. In other words, the sales order is gotten when a customer shows interest in purchasing a set of items.
A sales invoice acts as a bill that is delivered to the customer for a product delivered or a job completed. The sales invoice is more like a receipt for goods purchase.
Sales order comes at the start of a transaction while a sales invoice comes at the end of a transaction.
